The mayor of Cainta, Rizal on Monday said he might extend the suspension of classes in his town if authorities fail to stock up on materials to keep students safe from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The local government is procuring N-95 and surgical masks, rubbing alcohol and disinfectant that will be distributed to students when they return to school, said Cainta Mayor Kit Nieto.

"'Pag hindi po namin na-reach iyong number na kailangan, I will extend the [March 9 and 10 class] suspension," he said.

The Philippines so far confirmed 10 cases of the novel coronavirus, including an incident of local transmission.

Cainta is the hometown of a 62-year-old COVID-19 patient who regularly visited a prayer hall in San Juan City and later infected his wife, said the health department.

Cainta health workers will fumigate public spaces and are checking residents for fever, a symptom of COVID-19, said Nieto.

The town already has a stockpile of 30,000 surgical and N-95 masks, he added.
