The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday welcomed the decision of local government units (LGUs) to suspend classes in light of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) threat.

“We respect LGUs decision to proactively suspend classes,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said at a press briefing in Malacañang.

In January, the DOH discouraged schools from suspending classes as a precaution against COVID-19, noting that the World Health Organization has not advised it yet.

Local governments of several cities and municipalities, however, on Monday declared class suspension in response to the recent announcement of confirmed COVID-19 cases present in their areas. These were:

  • Cainta, Rizal: all levels, public and private (March 9 and 10)
  • Taytay, Rizal: all levels, public and private
  • San Juan City: all levels, public and private
  • Marikina City: all levels, public and private (March 9 to 11)
  • Lingayen, Pangasinan: all levels, public and private

Duque said the DOH will meet with the Department on Education to issue a recommendation on the matter at the inter-agency task force meeting on Monday.
